History

On the Road for 49 Years

Continuously Serving

A Constantly Growing Need

The first formal Meals on Wheels program in America began in the 1950s in Philadelphia. Since then, our organization has grown into a vast network of community-based programs providing home-delivered meals to homebound seniors across the country. Here in Jefferson County, Meals on Wheels was set in motion in 1976 – serving just five clients at that time. Last year, thanks to our generous donors and the dedicated service of 797 volunteers, our local program delivered 237,203 meals to 1,264 homebound seniors and disabled persons throughout Jefferson County. The program is administered by United Way of Central Alabama.
